What does a typical SUMMER SEASON LOOK LIKE

This season is usually one of the more chill seasons. For the Copper Hills Guard we allow anyone who is going into 6th grade and up until they are going into their senior year to march. We have 2 different lines of rifle and flag. Each line has captains that go along with them. This season is so much fun because we march in multiple parades like Copperton, West Jordan, Sandy, Bountiful, and Day's of '47. The season usually begins mid June where we practice 3 days a week for around 4 hours and learn how choreography and how to march in time while spinning like we would in a parade route. For this specific program if any of the 9-12th graders that want to do fall, are required to participate in the summer season or at least in the camps so they can learn the appropriate choreography and skill to prepare them for the upcoming competitive season. If there is issues with this please communicate with Bryanna so we can find a compromise so they can be as set up as possible for the competitive season. Now summer band doesn't stop at summer season, we allow our 6-8 graders to do pep band which is during fall so please go look at fall season for more info. There is usually a kick off meeting in the springtime that coexists with our fall kick off that go over song choices, parades, and fees that you can go to before you decide if you want to join the team..

What does a typical FALL SEASON LOOK LIKE

Fall Color Guard is considered part of the the MMG (Mighty Marching Grizzlies). We work very closely with the marching band. We have one week usually at the end of July that is 8-5 (ish) Monday through Friday where we learn choreography to prepare for the upcoming competitive season. After this we will go into a week long band camp where we learn our spots on the field and how to put choreography with it. After these 2 LONG weeks, school is usually around the corner and we go into normal rehersals. In the past they have been Monday 3:30-5PM, Wednesday 6-9PM, and Friday's if we don't have a football game we will have practice from 5:30-8. Every other year we are able to join the CHHS band tour and go out of state which is so cool. We are going the Fall of 2026! We also travel to different stadiums across the state like the Maverick Stadium up at Utah State University and Greater Zion Stadium at Utah Tech University. The one down at Utah Tech is an overnight trip and usually lasts a weekend. There is a kick off meeting usually in the springtime to address show themes and fees so please attend those before you make a 100% commitment because we have lots of options to try and help you be able to do this activity. Attendance is pretty mandatory the entire season and we ask that if you miss you let staff and the student leadership secretary know so we can keep track as we know things happen and need to be planned. With the competitive season being extremely competitive if you miss a rehersal you may have to sit out for part of the show for safety as the students safety comes first. Pep band is another fun opportunity we have! We are able to perform pre-game with the MMG at most if not all home football games and get a fun uniform to go with it. We will then go into the stands and jam out to stand tunes that our very own band plays with pom poms. It is a fun way to stay involved and get into the football games with a team. What does a typical WINTER SEASON LOOK LIKE

Winter Color Guard is by far the most different season out of the 3. Usually this starts with auditions in around November to deteremine team sizes and where a team competes with practices starting in Dec that take a break over winter break and resume again in January until end of March. This is organized a little differently because we are not apart of the MMG anymore. This is also a very competitive season which means competitions are there from end of January to end of March on a wide variety of Saturdays. They are mainly local and furthest we travel is up to Roy High School for state competition (as of 2027 season) the rest are in and around Jordan School District, Salt Lake County and Utah County. Fees tend to be a little cheaper as we are not having to pay for as much travel and as many elaborate props. Just like with fall marching band attendance is mandatory. We understand things happen so please communicate with staff members and student leadership secretary. Also just like with fall season, if you miss a day with a show coming up that weekend you will be asked to sit out for the part of the show that we changed for safety reasons and we will work with you to figure out what you can do to make it a good show. CHHS Color Guard Staff:

Color Guard Director - Bryanna Bekkemellom

Bryanna started her color guard career with Herriman High School in 7th grade. She fell in love with this form of performance after quitting dance just a few years before. She kept with it at Herriman until she graduated high school in 2021. She started coaching at Mountain Ridge High School the following fall season. The students at MRHS helped her fall in love with color guard from a coaching point of view. Bryanna ended up spinning with the University of Utah in 2022 when they won PAC-12 Championships and went to the Rose Bowl for the second time! She also went on to spin with Salt Lake Independent in 2025 where she was able to spin in WGI Championships with her show. Following this giant dream of hers, she ultimately decided her heart lied with coaching after being in a student career for going on 10 years. Not only was she able to spin for many years, she also danced for multiple years. She danced with a few different companies before she quit by doing ballet, jazz and hiphop. In high school she did ballroom and loved this form of dance sparking her love for swing/line dancing (which she still does when she has time). She went onto college and took a few college level classes at the University of Utah. She is so excited to continue her coaching journey at CHHS and teach the students what she has come to love and have such passion for.

Color Guard Assistant Director - Nikki Legler

Nikki started color guard in middle school spinning parades with Sky View High School and instantly fell in love. She contiued with it and spun for the rest of her high school career for both Sky View High School and Cache Vlaley winter Guard graduating in 2024. After she made the move to the big city and started attending and spinning for the University of Utah! Then seh got the amazing opportunity to spin for Salt Lake Independent for their 2025 season and got to compete in Dayton, Ohio. She spent this past summer coaching for Sky View High School and having a wonderful time getting to learn to coach and share the knowledge she has gained. From a childhood in ballet classes to a passion for color guard, Nikki truly believes that the opportunity to work hard, learn and perform is the biggest gift you could be given and she is so grateful for the opportunity to share that gift with students and help them become the best they can be.

Color Guard Technician - Elliot Watts

Elliot started color guard as a freshman with West Jordan High School, graduating in 2024. After high school they went on to perform with The Battalion Drum and Bugle Corps in 2024, his other color guard experience includes Weber State University in 2024, Pride of Utah Independent Open in 2025 & 2026, and most recently The Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps in 2026 where they placed 12th and attended finals for the second year in a row! Outside of guard they are a student at Weber State University where they are studying to be a paramedic, they are also apart of the marching band in the percussion section since 2025. Elliot is so excited to be able to share his passion for guard with such amazing kids, and is excited to help grow the marching arts in West Jordan!
